In Hoboken and Jersey City, outdoor space is coveted. We’re used to being out and about in our neighborhoods, walking to our favorite shops, eateries, and parks.

This year, things are looking different. Chances are, we’ll all be spending more time on our own patios and outdoor spaces.

So what can you do to turn your small outdoor space into a relaxing retreat? Here are 7 tips to get you started.

Create an Extension of the Interior

Make your outdoor patio or balcony an extension of the interior. You can do this by using the same color and design scheme as your living room, and arrange seating so it looks like one expansive room. When weather allows, keep the doors to the balcony open. This can make both your indoor and outdoor living spaces feel larger.

Café Style

Think about the seating in your favorite coffee shop. The tables and chairs are just big enough to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee and don’t take up a lot of space. When selecting outdoor furniture, think bistro style. You may not be able to sit for a four-course dinner, but you can enjoy a morning beverage and a happy hour cocktail outside.

Highlight the Intimacy

A small outdoor space does have its perks: starting with privacy. Create an even more intimate setting by putting up barrier walls. You can also incorporate string lights, an outdoor rug, and comfortable pillows.

Go Vertical

If you can’t go out, go up. Vertical planters allow you to create a vibrant green wall. For those who prefer a garden, you can plant lettuce, herbs, and some veggies.

Wheel it out

A small bar cart is perfect for holding drinks and snacks. The best part? You can wheel it from the kitchen to your outdoor space, eliminating multiple trips. When you need to free up some extra space outside, push it to a corner or back inside.

Faux Green

If you have a courtyard, you can upgrade your landscaping with artificial grass. Even a small strip of green can change your entire outdoor area. Plus, you never have to worry about watering the lawn.

When all else fails, focus on the view

Perhaps the best part of your outdoor space is the view. If that’s the case, grab a seat and take it all in.
